How to Find the Serial Number of Your John Deere Product

If you're looking for agricultural, forestry or construction machinery, you can't go wrong if you choose John Deere. For additional product information and warranty coverage, you need to know your John Deere serial number, but it's not always easy to find on the product. You could contact your nearest John Deere dealer for help, but that's not necessary when you know where to look.

How to Decipher a John Deere Serial Number

According to John Deere manuals available online, each device has at least 13 digits but no more than 17 in its serial number. Once you find the number, here's how to decipher the digits for tractors: The first two or three characters (not necessarily digits) are the factory code.

The next four symbols represent the model number. If you have a 13-digit serial, the seventh character represents emissions level designation. In the case of 17-digit serials, letters from ninth to twelfth position indicate security code, year of manufacturing, code of transmission and track or wheel designation.

As for the year, A stands for 2010, B marks 2011 and so on. The last five characters in a 17-number serial or the last six in a 13-digit product ID are specific to your machine.

If you're thinking about buying an EZtrak from John Deere on sale, you can find the serial number by standing in front of the machine and taking a look under the seat on the left side. To decipher the John Deere serial number, refer to the previous section.

Tractors

Tractors are one of the most popular products, but some John Deere specifications may be confusing when it comes to the serial number position. Go to the rear of the unit and find the left fender wheel well and frame with some numbers under it.

Walk Behind Mowers

As for walk-behind mowers, if you take a look at John Deere pdf manuals, you see that the serial number is located in two places, on the box itself and on the unit. When you're behind the mower, you can find the information on the deck's top left side.

John Deere schematics tell you a lot, including where you can find serial numbers. Here's a short guide to help you locate them:

Pressure washers: From in front of the unit, take a look at the bottom left to find it.
Generator: Check under the hood a bit toward the back of the unit.
Snowblower: It's on top of the middle section of the product.
Riding mowers: Look under the operator's seat in the area between the rear wheels.

If you have any problems, your John Deere service manual usually indicates the position of the ID number.
